Do you want to know how the invention of the Frisbee came to pass? Well, it turns out that there is no one definitive answer to that question. The Frisbee was actually invented by multiple people over the course of several years. So, who was responsible for this popular pastime? Read on to find out!

A Brief History of the Frisbee

Early
Ages
The invention of the Frisbee starts out in ancient Greek and Roman times when they played a game called discus, which is thought to be the earliest form of the Frisbee. In this game, players would throw a metal discus as far as they could.
1800s
The Frisbee can be traced back to the late 1800s, when a man named William Russell Frisbie started a baking company in Connecticut. His company made pie tins that were sold to colleges and universities in the area. These pie tins were often reused by students as flying discs. It is believed that the term “Frisbee” was coined by these students, who would yell “Frisbie!” when they threw the tin.
1900s
In 1948, Walter Frederick Morrison and Warren Franscioni invented a plastic flying disc called the “Flyin-Saucer.” This was the first time a Frisbee-like product was made from plastic. Morrison and Franscioni sold their invention to the Wham-O toy company in 1955. In 1957, Wham-O renamed the “Flyin-Saucer” to the “Frisbee,” after the pie tins that were originally used as flying discs. The Frisbee became a massive success, and is now one of the most popular toys in the world.
2000’s -
onwards
In the 2000s, the Frisbee continued to evolve. New tricks and techniques were developed, and the Frisbee became a popular sport. There are now multiple professional Frisbee leagues around the world.

The Discus

The Frisbee can be traced back to the ancient Greek and Roman game of discus. In this game, players would throw a metal discus as far as they could. The discus was originally made from stone, iron, or bronze. The first recorded mention of the discus was in Homers’ Iliad, which was written in the 8th century BC. In this Greek epic poem, the character Achilles throws a discus to vent his rage after the death of his friend Patroclus. The Roman version of the game was called discobolus. This game was popular among the upper class, and it is thought that Julius Caesar used to play it. The discus continued to be popular throughout the centuries. In the Middle Ages, there was agame called quoits that was played with metal discs. This game is thought to be the inspiration for the modern-day game of horseshoes.

Since then, the sport has grown in popularity.
